Saree Curry Night at Sandy Row Community Centre celebrates Diwali

South Belfast came alive to the beat of Bollywood on Sunday as local people gathered for a Saree Curry Night to celebrate Diwali.

The family event at Sandy Row Community Centre was hosted by the Belfast Asian Women’s Academy (BAWA) in conjunction with BSCR and featured some delicious dishes and a beautiful Saree display.

Diwali, the festival of lights, is celebrated on the 15th day of the Hindu month of Kartik. It usually takes place on the day of the new moon or Amavasy, which is holy to Hindus and considered the darkest night of the year.

Ana Chandran, chair and founder of BAWA, said it was important for the whole local community to be able to share in the festival’s message of hope.

“These types of celebrations bring people together and build friendships. We wanted the opportunity to celebrate Diwali with the local community here in Sandy Row and to show that we are all united,” she added.

This year, Diwali fell on Monday, October 24 and to mark the occasion, Belfast City Hall was illuminated red and yellow as the BAWA ladies performed a spectacular flash mob dance performance to mark the start of the festival.
